Proof66 Notes

The Macallan Distillery was first licensed to sell whisky in 1824 by founder Alexander Reid (though--like most distilleries--it was probably producing illegally long before that). The name is said to be derived from magh (translated as "fertile piece of ground" and ellan (translated as "of St Fillan: an Irish monk from the 8th century). Macallan is one of the few distilleries that grows their own barley--it could be declared "estate whisky" in a sense.

This was actually my very first foray into Macallan. I saw it at a bar & had to have a glass ($20!!). It was really really good. I figured the bottle would run me around 80-90 (what I consider to be the higher priced range for my favorite age of 18). I was shocked at what they were charging... very dissappointing. At around $100 I would probably only get it for speciall occassion but at this price I'm afraid I'll stay clear... pity because it is quite delicious.

Very nice, very Macallan but at $150 USF?? For $150 USF, you could buy the Macallan 12yo, and the Highland Park 18 yo. A much better 18 yo dram in my humble opinion.

Very smooth. Light smoke. Balanced flavors create a sweeter side but in a rustic way. Over priced at $150 compaired to a Johnny Walker Gold ($85) which by my compairison seemed smoother than the Macallan. Great Whisky!
