Proof66 Notes

Old Forester 1897 is a "bottled-in-bond" bourbon, which means it is bottled at 100 proof (significantly higher than most bourbon on the market which tends to be in the 80s or occasionally in the 90s with some exceptions). They call it the second release of their "whiskey row series" and named it honor of the Bottled in Bond Act passed in 1897. They call it "big and bold" and suggest looking fr vanilla and coffee flavor notes among others.

Smooth, little bite, almost syrupy

The first word that popped in my head when trying this bourbon was "Franken-bourbon"! It reminds me of piecing together characteristics of three or four other bourbons that I've tried. It has alcohol edges/heat and spice (oak and rye) reminiscent of Colonel EH Taylor SB; it has that velvety caramel character similar to Buffalo Trace; it has an overall character similar to the Jim Beam Signature series (12 year and Quarter Cask). Whisky Advocate really skewered this bourbon (gave it a 77), but I believe they're way off with that judgement because it's quite enjoyable and doesn't have nearly the amount of flaws to justify that score. It's supposedly made with the methods and ingredient types that they used in 1897 so it's interesting (and good to know) that they had decent whiskey way back then!
