Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2013 Vintage Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
This is a Tier 1 score in the Whiskey category. It means the spirit has won the highest recommendation at least once and probably many times.
Old Forester Birthday Bourbon is a small batch bourbon first made in 2002 to commemorate the 156th birthday of founder George Garvin Brown. It's released in annual batches and will carry an annual vintage on the label. Because of the vintages, one should expect differences in the taste of whiskeys from different years. The master distiller hand-selects specific whiskeys on a specific day resulting in a "one-of-a-kind character and flavor that will never be replicated again. Its unique decanter style glass bottle is a throwback to the late 1800's when Old Forester was first produced."
>This is the 2013 bottling. According to the press release, master distiller Chris Morris said, "This year's batch was selected for its robust presentation of flavors which showcase vanilla bean and caramelized oak paired with deep layers of warming spices and a delicate nut character."
Early Times Distillery began its journey as JTS Brown and Bro. founded by George Garvin Brown in 1870 believing in a market for "medicinal quality whisky." They claim to be the first to sell bourbon by the bottle rather than by the barrel. The company eventually evolved into Brown-Forman in 1890 (from accountant/friend George Forman), then the Brown-Forman Distillery Company in 1902. Most interesting, in 1946 Brown-Forman founded the Bluegrass Cooperage and today is the only distillery company in the world to make its own bourbon barrels.
