Proof66 Notes

The whiskey was first made in 1840 founded by Raymond Hayden, grandson of Basil Hayden--one of the founders of Jim Beam. His picture remains on the front of each bottle. It was made by the Old Crow Distillery until 1987 when the label was sold to Beam Global.

Updated review. Today I got Old Grand- Dad Bonded 100 proof in new Suntory Beam upgraded bottle with cork stopper. The nose is rich pipe tobacco, oak, and caramel. The entry is smooth with palate of vanilla, oak , and spice ending with warm finish of spice and oak.. I applaud Suntory Beam upgrade of the bottle and taste. . The sweetness is there but now in balance with right amount of sweetness. The Old Grand-Dad 114 proof is same price in my area and is much better whisky

I admire distillers who go the extra step to being bonded, not so much on the age aspects but because I am assured of whose whiskey I am drinking and where it came from. I really like the Old Grand-Dad "114" expression and although this 100 bonded product should be the same mash bill I find this bourbon to have a higher spiciness than the 114. The classic flavors of corn-Vanilla-Carmel-etc. seem to have a stronger presence in the 114. To me good bourbon needs the flavor of Rye to make it complete but I don't need quite this much. Still very good bourbon and the price ($20) can't be beat. I'm scoring an additional star because of the bonding and the value.

I agree with BDanner's review on this bourbon. I also get alcohol and rye on the nose, but I also get a corny sweetness in it as well. On the palate I get caramel corn, rye, roasted peanuts, oak spice, and char. There's a little alcohol edginess in the flavor profile but the other flavors are intense enough that the alcohol doesn't detract from the experience. Overall I like the way the flavor just punches you in the mouth the way this one does. On the finish the corn aroma and char hang around for a while. A 1 liter bottle goes for $20 at my local liquor store so I'd say that this bourbon is a great value. It definitely makes a strong argument for the title of my favorite sub-$20 bottle.

The packaging has been updated with a new label and a synthetic cork stopper. Huge upgrade in my opinion. Nice golden amber color. At first the nose is all alcohol, but give it a second to breathe and you get a great rye heavy sweetness. Enters sweet and finishes with a spicy rye kick thanks to it's bottled in bond 100 proof. I get notes of cinnamon, caramel and a hint of dry roasted peanuts. Ice turns up the sweet and brings some oak char to the mix. I don't know the mash bill on this, but it could be subbed in any rye cocktail. This goes for $20 in my area, and is worth every penny. A solid value for a 4 star whiskey.

Cranecreek (2016-01-15):
Wow, that was bad typing on my part ! I need to learn to proof read before I post.

Proof66 Staff (2016-01-17):
No worries, Cranecreek. We're very forgiving about typos here. Particularly when you're talking about a 100 proof bourbon and presumably writing in the moment!

BDanner (2016-01-18):

The nose on this bonded jewel is wonderfully fragrant. But use caution. I find it a bit harsh on the gullet, needing "breathing" and also a bit of water, in the form of an ice cube. This is a tasty bourbon, just a bit more harsh than EW White label bonded for instance. It is not overbalanced in any flavor, with the oak and corn and rye in good combination. It may have a high rye portion but is not "sweet" like many popular ryes. It is a fine bourbon. I am pleased that it is not simply "oak", and "oak" and then more "oak". If the top priced bourbons are beyond your means, consider that you needn't go any "higher" than this one to have a great bourbon.

This bourbon makes a big taste statement with a high alcohol punch. If you like high rye bourbons and high proof, which I don't then you will probably like this.Worth a try in the local bar before buying the bottle.Opens up with ice.

My bar will never be without this bourbon. Perfect mix of flavor, strength and unbeatable price. Delicious with a little ice, perfect for when you want a tasty drink without breaking the bank. $19 for a liter in WI.

This is excellent. Sweet and spicy aroma, among the best to whiff of all Bourbons. Taste is very unique as well. Very spicy rye mixed with sweet corn. You probably can't drink this daily, it's 100 proof, but keep one in your liquor cabinet.
