Proof66 Notes

The whiskey was first made in 1840 founded by Raymond Hayden, grandson of Basil Hayden--one of the founders of Jim Beam. His picture remains on the front of each bottle. It was made by the Old Crow Distillery until 1987 when the label was sold to Beam Global.

The first thing I noticed about this drink was the high alcohol level. I took a whiff and wasn’t surprised when I then looked at the bottle and it said 57%. My first sip revealed some spice to go along with the strong alcohol level. The drink just seems spicy at this point. When my ice melted and the drink got increasingly cooler, it opened up a hint of cherry. There isn’t that usual hint of oak that I like, but it was still very pleasant. I would not consider this a smooth, or well balanced bourbon, but if you like that kind of ‘in your face’ bourbon and a warm toasty feeling, this will get the job done. jaketaz nailed it. This is the best high proof bourbon - price not considered. It is delicious. What I can get is still at batch 1. So, stock up is my suggestion - if you like it.

I was so excited when I saw that my state has added this item to its ABC Store shelves that I immediately put back the bottle of Pikesville Rye I was so happy to find. The nose on this one is great. One of my favorites to date. I was expecting high alcohol, but I actually found it tamer than the OGD BIB. Traditional notes of vanilla with peanut brittle followed by a great combination of hay/straw/leather/old wood. All the GOOD smells from an old barn. Tried neat you get dry roast peanuts, heavy vanilla and cinnamon. A pleasant burn on the finish without being too hot and a lingering taste of cinnamon redhots. Everything good about the OGD BIB is there, just dialed up to 11. A large ice cube brings out more of the peanut note and while it doesn't kill the sweet, it puts a major hurt on it (which is opposite of my notes on the OGD BIB). I see myself sipping this one neat on occasion, and using it for spirit forward cocktails such as an Old Fashioned. This and Wild Turkey Rare Breed are the only two overproofed bourbons I've had. Both are solidly in my top five and definitely earn 5 stars. For $25-$30, you can't go wrong with this one.

Glad you were able to find tis one. Different from the OGDBIB and i like it much better. Deeper flavors.

At about $25 this 114 is a tremendous buy. Delivering all of the traditional bourbon flavors (see Munchers review) and the fact that it is not diluted down much makes this "Old Granddad" a 5 star. Although it does not have the complex tastes of top shelf bourbons, it is full of non stop flavor and the correct sweetness. A little spring water or an ice cube brings out the best. Lets keep this jewel our secret while others pass it up ! (the 5 star rating has an extra star for value)

My wish was granted! Just found it in local ABC store with a sign underneath stating "new item". Caused me to put back the bottle of Pikesville Rye I was excited to find. Can't wait to try it, and review!

The best high proof bourbon at this price. I'm a huge fan of Stagg Jr and this is a lot like "Stagg Jr Jr"... similar deal but rougher and younger. Oaky and fruity and doesn't disappear in a Manhattan, it has personality and will be my high proof of choice whenever I don't feel like spending $60 on Stagg. A julep with this might kill you.

This is just a nicely balanced, robust, full flavored bourbon. It has the standard bourbon aromas and flavors (vanilla, caramel, cinnamon/spice, and a hint of honey and leather) and nothing offensive or off putting. It's not going to excite you to the point of buying a case, but I can't really find anything specific to criticize either. I gave it an extra star for the value. It's rare to find this much quality in a high proof/cask strength whiskey for a price this low.
