Proof66 Notes

The whiskey was first made in 1840 founded by Raymond Hayden, grandson of Basil Hayden--one of the founders of Jim Beam. His picture remains on the front of each bottle. It was made by the Old Crow Distillery until 1987 when the label was sold to Beam Global.

The bottle I have has new Suntory Beam label with high rye mash bill written Under Old Grand-Dad on the front. It is 80 proof, now.The nose is complex with rye, pipe tobacco, oak , caramel, vanilla and spice. The entry is smooth with a palate of spice,, rye, vanilla, honey with lingering rye ending.Aslezak is spot on . This new 80 proof is too water down compared to previous 86 proof.

Couldn't find it in 86 proof, bought 80. I can normally drink cheap bourbon on the rocks (Evan Williams, Old Crow, Four Roses) but this was hard to get down. It's okay in mixed drinks, but so are all cheap bourbons.

I've actually only ever had the 80 proof, which replaced this. Old Granddad is sort of like Jim Beam White Label (same distiller btw), only I'd actually order it on purpose. Its the same age as the basic Beam, but with a lot more rye in the mash (I think its 22% vs 12 for the regular Beam). It's a bit smoother, but still burns pretty significantly (partly from the alcohol and partly from the rye), and its a lot more interesting (a bit more caramel and a lot more rye character). This is why I actually like Old Granddad (though I don't love it). A bourbon that's a little bit smoother than Beam White Label is drinkable for me (I enjoy several different 100 proof bourbons anyway, plus there's always ice), and the extra caramel and strong rye character make it worth drinking. If I want a cheap dram at the bar, or the selection is limited but I'm tired of ordering Jack, this is what I get. You could do worse as a bottle buy too I suppose (its frequently on sale for about the same price as Beam White Label), though this is NOT the kind of bottle buy I'd recommend for someone looking to get plastered for cheap as I suspect this could give you the sort of epic hangover Wild Turkey 101 used to give me back when I was dumb enough to try and kill an entire bottle in a single evening. 3 out of 5 stars for me. Anything more than $20 a bottle and its out of my price range though as Four Roses Yellow Label is MUCH easier to drink, and Wild Turkey 81 is often available at $21 and much better over ice.

Oh my god. This is like fire in a bottle. Drink enough of this and youll imagine grandpa on the label is talking to you.

A little watery, yeah, but a nice zesty flavor. A little too syrupy. Nice spice notes. Probably not worth the price in NC, compared to Evan Williams 1783.

Most stores no longer have the 86, as Beam has switched OGD to 80 proof. I picked up a liter for $19 in Houston. I have had the 100, 80, and now the 86 proof. The 100 is excellent, but may need water as it's like getting smacked in the face by a rye fire. The new 80 proof replaces the 86 proof, and is too watery to be enjoyable. I find the 86 proof has the flavors of the 100 without burning you. It's too bad they have discontinued this proof in late 2012.

Sometimes you have to rate a whiskey on its own merits. Old Grand Dad 86 has a balance of good flavor, tradition, and cost. I enjoy it straight, on the rocks, or mixed with ginger ale. It's my everyday bourbon. I buy it by the half gallon and refill my 200ml and 375ml bottles for travel and my 750ml bottle for home. Cheers!

Youngish with rough edges- old school and better than Jim Beam, if you like your whiskey a bit young, raw, and uncomplicated you will like it. I used to drink this bourbon when I was young (age 10 or 12 onwards if I remember correctly), but haven't had it in a numbers of years. I can't say I would go back to it. It is however better than a number of alternatives in it's price range.
