Proof66 Notes

The 12yr is the youngest expression from the distillery and is regarded as the "definitive expression" from Pulteney. They regard it as having a faintly salty (from the sea air) and a slight sherry note. It is bottled at a very gentle 80 proof (compare with many single malts at 86 proof).

First off my bottle is 86% not 80% proof. (bar code=3207010009) .. Still being new to my overall appreciation of Scotch (I still have a tendency to compare to Bourbon) I found this to be one I was impressed with. The nose was light but still contained the peat smoke, Vanilla. and some spice. As far as taste, I can't say there was an impressive amount of "seaside or Iodine" quality to me. What I did get was a smokey and well rounded whisky delivering Vanilla, raw honey and a contributing spice & mild pepper. Actually a quite nice sipper-but in the end not a whisky I would likely buy again at $38.

Proof66 Staff (2017-03-06):
Hi Cranecreek... good catch. We did a bit of research and several of the scores report an 86 proof version as well as an 80 proof version. Right now, the marketing website and all images we can find on the subject (as well as last year's San Francisco score) show an 80 proof bottling. We think you have in your hands the "Distillery Release," which appears to be a special bottling offered at 86 proof. Congratulations on your find!

I'll be on the look out for this one, especially the 86 proofer. Thanks for the review.

I'm mo expert on the maritime malt scotches, but I do find this one quite nice. The salt shines through and gives way to a medium amount of malt accompanying a creamy feel. The malt lingers with just about perfect sweetness balance. Pretty smooth with a strange touch of burn on the back of the throat going down. I'm not getting a lot of other notes out of this. Maybe a very light touch of caramel and a slightly larger hint of pepper on the finish. Not getting any fruit, as some others have noted. Nice stuff, quite enjoyable, and a good deal at $30 with the gift pack glassware.

I did not get the "saltiness" but other than that quite similiar for my experience.

Salty sea air on the nose with a slight caramel sweetness. A little more bite than expected from an 80 proof. More complex on the palate than on the finish, which is not long or complex, but leaves hints of fruit and salt. I like it a lot, but not as much as Glenmorangie 12.

I would recommend with a touch of water. This single malt is very pleasant, smooth, but without a lot of body. A nice level of sweetness, faint seaspray. This scotch is also a good price point at under $50. Glenmorangie 12 is comparable.

This whisky is a great value for an entry level "Maritime Malt". It's much more complex than the entries from the other well known distilleries. I like it better than the 12's from Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Balvenie, Aberlour, Speyburn (10 year), and Tomatin. Glenmorangie and Macallan would require some side by side glencairns because those two malts are quite tasty in my opinion. I agree with PhatCat about the nose: I also get tropical fruits and seaweed/brine along with some honey and floral notes as well. The palate is similar to the nose but there's also a big note of oaky spice/pepper in there too. I don't think the finish is short at all; I think the opposite in fact. The floral notes and that oaky spice/pepper quality hang around for quite some time after swallowing. I definitely like the 21 year better than the 12, but I don't know if the 21 is worth being triple the price of the 12. Bottom line: this scotch is well worth the $38 I paid for it.

Tropical fruits and seaweed/brine on the nose come through beautifully on the palate, but unfortunately, they lead into a short, dry finish of salty, nutty, toffee that is a little disappointing. That combined with the alcohol bite give off the impression of a younger scotch and ultimately holds this one back from being anything better than decent. Still, even with its flaws, it's a recommendable whisky given its price. There are some good flavors in the 12YR, so I'm curious to try older expressions from Old Pulteney to see if extended aging is able to smooth out the rough edges.

Lovely nose of sweet honey and florals and toffee. Medium body, medium finish. My go to Scotch!
