Proof66 Notes

The Orphan Barrel project is a fascinating adventure in uncovering "forgotten" stocks of whiskey. This is not as uncommon as it might sound with whiskey quietly aging in warehouses for a decade or more long after the company that laid them down has moved on. Diageo founded the project to launch limited edition whiskeys from these stores.

I'm pretty tepid about this. I loved the idea of "discovered" whiskey and the idea of a 20yr old whiskey. I thought maybe I had a $70 treasure on my hands. I tried really hard to like it. But in the event, it reminds me very much of Elijah Craig aged expressions and none of the smoothness and character of, say, a Blanton's, Booker's, or Knob Creek SBR. There are many bourbons I like better. At the price and age, I expected a ton more in the glass than I ended up getting.

Lots of oak and nice heat. The smallest amount of spice gives the sip character. Very smooth. Small hints of sweet to begin with and in the middle. Not mindblowing but very good. I give this a five because I would pay 50 or a little more for the bottle ( a four would mean I would pay $40 etc..). At $75 I would say a few bucks overpriced.
