Proof66 Notes

According to the write-up at Ellen Jaye, Pikesville Rye used to be Pikesville Maryland Rye whiskey until it closed in 1972. The brand was purchased by Heaven Hill Distilleries, who produces it today in Kentucky. Now with Heaven Hill, Pikesville Rye is described as "Representative of the other great rye whiskey style, the Maryland or Potomac style" with a taste that is "spicy" and "full bodied." It appears to have been re-branded and re-formulated, now appearing at a striking 110 proof.

The 80 proof version was $20 at my local ABC store (Virginia) and gets 5 stars based on value. It is a $35 bottle and better/as good as some $50 ryes. With a good vermouth it makes a solid Manhattan.

If there were 6 stars, I'd give it a 7. This is a down home unpretentious Rye that I like better than any of the nouveau "boutique" ryes that the majors have come up with. Until I found Pikesville in a funny little country liquor store in Washington County Md., my rye of choice was always Old Overholt, another under appreciated and wonderful rye whiskey. When you factor in the amazing price point there is no preferable rye on the market today.

Truly a steal in the burgeoning rye market! Inexpensive yet tastes twice the price. For example, I would put Pukesville against Bulliet rye in a blind taste test any day.
