Proof66 Notes

Powers Gold Label whiskey is a nod to the tradition of selling a "white label" under those casks issued to the whiskey bonders who sold to customers versus the distiller's own "gold label," which they sold themselves. The Gold Label underwent a recipe change by Irish Distillers in 2013, where they adjusted the proof and recipe as well as chill-filtering the whiskey (which we find generally leads to a lighter bodied whiskey).

Powers whiskey is named for James Power, who founded his distillery in 1791 and whose son (John) followed in his footsteps.

Irish whiskey is light and delicate. This may trump the standard offerings of the big names (Jameson, bush ect) but it certainly isn't anything special. The more I work my way around the standard Irish offerings the more I appreciate the redbreast 12. Compared to scotches and bourbons in the same category there just isn't enough going on flavor wise to hold my attention with these. Red breast is as low on the Irish totem pole I'm willing to go at this point. Hopefully after I've climbed up the Jameson line I'll have better news to report...

Best Irish Whiskey that I have ever had. My grandmother is from County Clare, and grew up in a pub, so I've tried the bulk of Irish Whiskeys. To be fair, I have not tried any Irish single malts apart from Knappogue Castle 12yr. Still, you can't go wrong with this bottle.

Smoother and a bit more flavor than the comparable Jameson. Slightly irrelevant but the cheap looking label does not do this bottle justice

I bought this to drink on St. Patricks Day. It was very smooth and surprisingly full flavored.
