American Whiskey - Bourbon
Reservoir Distillery Bourbon Whiskey
This is a Tier 1 score in the Whiskey category. It means the spirit has won the highest recommendation at least once and probably many times.
Revervoir Bourbon is initially a very small run and available only in 375ml sizes. It is bottled at a relatively high 100 proof, presumably preserving the inherent characteristics of the whiskey. There is no age statement and it is from Virginia rather than Kentucky. To clarify a few common bourbon myths: it need only be made in the United States not necessarily Kentucky. It also must be aged in new barrels of charred American Oak. "Straight bourbon" requires a minimum of 2 years of aging--Reservoir is not considered "straight bourbon" and is likely aged for less (at least in its current expression) and what one would regard as a "light whiskey" in that context, appealing to those who prefer less oak and char in the taste.
Reservoir Distillery was founded by David Cuttino and Jay Carpenter in 2009 with the intention of making whiskey. Their Reservoir bourbon was first released in 2010 and kicked off the operation. Cuttino learned the craft working an unpaid internship at Tuthilltown Distillery in upstate New York. (From Richmond BizSense)
