Certainly smooth and approachable, but to my taste it doesn't accomplish anything that I can't already get in a dozen other bourbons for less money. If it's smoothness you're after, the Elijah 12yr is smoother for less money. For sweetness, I would say Woodford has it beat. For value, the Evan 1783 is a ten year bourbon for $15 measly dollars and is a fine tasting product. If it's high proof you want, Backbone Bourbon will get you handled, or you could go the rye route and simply get some Rittenhouse. Not to knock the product, which is fine, it's just a little unnecessary as there are many cheaper and better alternatives. Even Wild Turkey 101 stood up to this, to my individual palate anyways. Not terribly memorable.

This is a lovely, scintillating bourbon. In a world gone mad for either young, accelerated craft whiskey or high-priced "small batch" bourbon, this one comes in at a great price point and a delicious, creamy, and subtle sweet flavor for so much aging and such a high proof. Easily and unquestionably a match for Knob Creek and probably even Blantons.

Phizbin (2016-10-02):
Okay...have to follow up. I bought a second bottle recently and the bottle's disappointing. Like way disappointing. The bourbon I remember was rich and full. This one tastes like moonshine and heat. I don't know if the formal changed or something else or whether I got a bad bottle or I was just having a bad day. But the current bottle I have will be hard to finish.

I think my expectations were too high with this one (I was expecting 5 gleaming stars). I bought it based on John Hansell's 90+ review on Whisky Advocate along with the high marks here. It's a refined and well made whiskey, but I was a little disappointed upon trying it for the first time. I like the oaky spice and the caramel like sweetness, but aside from that Rowan's drinks like a standard wheat heavy whiskey with very little finish. Edith and derk will enjoy it I suspect.

4.2/5, buck wrote a good review. I'd say it's more directly competes with wood ford reserve, 1792, blanton's, and a few others. A smooth sweet and very easy to drink bourbon. Great entry level bourbon. Noah's mill is another story...

Why do I love Rowans Creek? For one, it is $35. Secondly, it can stand toe to toe with bourbons twice its price (its better than Eagle Rare 17, IMHO). Third, this is an extremely small batch bourbon aged about 15 years, and the flavors are fantastic. Great oak beginning, ending with with a crazy sweet (almost candied) notes of burnt sugar. And I really had no idea its 100 proof by the taste. I Along with its older sibling, Noahs Mill, these two are my current craft favorites, and my cabinet is never without this gem.
