Proof66 Notes

Russell's Reserve is a line of whiskey from the distillery that brings us Wild Turkey but these are specially selected barrels by Jimmy Russell, whose name appears on the label. Russell's Reserve 10yr bourbon is their signature corn-based grain bill whiskey.

Austin Nichols Distilling Company was originally a distillery in Lawrenceburg founded in 1905 by the Ripy brothers.

A beautiful nose with a nice, creamy flavor profile of toffee, brown sugar, and vanilla. Then it just goes away...very disappointed with the finish, or lack of finish. Enjoyed drinking this bourbon, but probably won't buy another bottle for a while given the price (about $38 in my area).

I've recently gained an appreciation for WT products after initially only caring for the Rare Breed. That WT trademark "funk" kind of grows on you and you can usually find a bottle of WT101 in my cabinet at all times. This one is light amber in the glass and even if this was a blind tasting, I would've identified it immediately as a WT product from the nose. Big bold vanilla custard, followed by nutmeg and baking spices. A splash of water gives it a slight floral note. Neat, it enters sweet with a peppery, dry dusty kick (that's the "funk" I've grown fond of). A little astringent with some oak on the finish. Water reduces the astringency but leaves the "funk" while adding lingering cinnamon to the finish. This, much like the WT101, benefits greatly from a splash of water. This is good, but I was really expecting more depth of flavor from a premium release by the Russells. While better than the WT101, it's not $10 better. I'll enjoy this bottle, but next time I'll stick to the 101 and keep the extra $10 in my pocket. A 3 1/2, but I'll round up to a 4.

KaiserSoze (2016-10-26):
I can't think of another whisk(e)y that has as inviting of a nose and palate entry that then just "disappears" in your mouth. There is absoletly no finish on this whatsoever. I agree completely about being disappointed with this for being a premium release. Not even factoring cost, I'll take WT101 over this any day.

I really can't in good faith get beyond the 3 star. I think it is better than Wild Turkey 101 but not enough to elevate it over the 101. It is less "peppery" than the 101 and the Bourbon flavors (Vanilla-Honey-Sweet Oak-Rye-etc.) are better portrayed. There is not much in the way of complexity and my expectations were left wanting. I think Munchers review mentioned expecting more for an upscale Bourbon. Unusual that the taste actually delivered more than the nose promised.

This bourbon has all the sweet notes: caramel, vanilla, creme bulee, custard etc. On the palate is less remarkable with bit of sweetness and smooth finish. Although this is ok Bourbon, i've had many other that are better and probably will not buy another bottle.

NeatPour is good at this liquor reviewing thing. Read his review and I agree completely, except for the preference for Woodford. I expected an mid/upper level whiskey from Wild Turkey to be bold and memorable. It's not bad, but I was let down after the first sip.

I was excited to try this... but I was left disappointed. I didn't get much 'rye' spiciness, or char, oak, or wheated sweetness. All i got was a nice mid level bourbon without anything special in it... for something in this catagory I'd favor Evan Williams single barrel, 1972, woodford, and a hand full of others before I reached for this. Being that it doesn't occupy a 'niche' I don't see it being refilled at my home bar. For scotch people, this is the equivalant of Irish whiskey for me... lighter delicate flavors... if that is your thing than this may be for you. That being said, I wouldn't pound the table telling people to not buy a bottle but rather I would politely suggest trying a glass at a bar first...

This is a wonderful bourbon. I found that in my Old Fashioned, when it hit the sweet spot it was outstanding, but the sweet spot was short lived. If it had held up to the end I would have given it an easy five stars.

Not my #1 bourbon, but very good none-the-less. Smooth and full of caramel on the front with a short, spicy finish. Very tasty and worth a try.

Love the smoke, spice, and complexity of this bourbon that does not forget it's true bourbon nature and still serves up plenty of rich, sweet, goodness.

love the smokeyness! I really like a good scotch but this gives a good wiskey lover a scotch feeling without the actual scotch label...

At double the price it would still be a great value! The fact that its not more expensive is a side benefit to this being a truly excellent whiskey.

Good balance of sweetness and complexity; caramel and vanilla notes are prominent. Also very well priced; Ive found bottles for $30-32.
