Proof66 Notes

Springbank whiskies are made using a "lightly peated" barley, which may please some consumers who might be overwhelmed by the heavy peat aromas of, say, Laphroaig and other famous single malts. Springbank is also proud of their "unique two-and-half-times distillation" giving the whisky "a character all its own."
Springbank Distillery is one of the last surviving producers of Campbeltown Single Malts located on the southern Kintyre peninsula.

This bottle was on sale for $79 and I'd never had anything by Springbank before (except once I had the 10 year when I was too drunk to remember!) so I thought I'd pull the trigger on this one. The nose on the 15 is uniquely different compared to the palate. On the nose I get malted grains, an array of fruit, and a little leather and oak. On the palate there's a big black pepper note, followed by some Highland Park like smoke and a hint of charred oak. There's a little sweetness in there, but it's faint. The ashy like char and that faint sweetness hang around on the finish. If I was more into cigars I'd think this would be a superb malt to accompany one. My only gripe is the price; even getting it on sale for $79 is getting into the price range that I believe is too high for a 15 year scotch, and there are many fantastic 18 year scotches that can be had for $80 dollars or less where I live.

This is a lovely drink, especially if don't want the taste of peat in your whiskey. There are several I prefer, such as Oban, but this is very fine.

Nose-dried fruit, tobacco, vanilla, not too much peat Body-full and loved how it seemed to evenly coat Taste/palate-sweet nutty with some hint of smokiness I tried the 10yo and was sold, then stumbled upon the 15yo. This cemented my love for the entire Springbank Campbeltown story...
