Proof66 Notes

Stagg Jr Bourbon, like it's predecessor the George T Stagg bourbon, is bottled straight from the barrel with no blending from water... that is, barrel proof. In the first release of 2013, this meant a proof of 134.4 (!!!) though there will be some variance in proof in subsequent releases.

I finally found a bottle! I’ve been searching for the last year-and-a-half for this stuff and stumbled across a bottle about a month ago. My bottle is 66.25 ABV – 132.5 proof - full, rich, and beautiful! The nose has a wonderful baked, warm caramel and brown sugar aroma. Once the glass sat for a few minutes, I was able to pick up some toasted oak and sweet corn. The alcohol smell is there, but in a good way – maybe cinnamon red hots? The flavor is thick, robust and sweet. The way it coats your mouth gives you the sensation you actually just ate something. The finish is nice and long with a very pleasant warming sensation. For me, adding 2 teaspoons of water was just right. In comparing this to Booker’s, I would say the Stagg has more of a sweet characteristic, while the Booker’s is more savory. Definitely going to take my time with this bottle and enjoy it as long as I can!

I've been trying so hard to like this bottle of bourbon. It just tastes so damned HOT whenever I try it. Ice... water... I'm trying. Based on your review, I'm going to try again tonight. I'll try the water and maybe drop in a splash of benedictine.

Curious to know if you ever found the "sweet spot" wit water or ice? My taste buds love spicy food & spicy booze, so this stuff I really what I enjoy. But no way could I "enjoy" an entire glass without adding water.

Didn't pull the trigger on this one the first time my local ABC got a shipment and I'd been kicking myself ever since. So, when I saw it was back, I snatched it up. My bottle clocks in at 136.6 proof and has a rich maple syrup amber color. The nose is dominated by butterscotch, but a splash adds some vanilla, varnished wood and fresh cut hay to the mix. Tried neat, it's thick and oily on the palate with baked cinnamon apples and oak astringency. Has a lingering burn on the finish, but goes down smooth with a cinnamon and astringent aftertaste. A splash bring out notes of dark chocolate. I found this very good, but not as complex as I was expecting and I was a little put off by the astringent note. I may have to try different amounts of dilution to get this one just right, but it is a more than enjoyable sipper neat. It is definitely good, but it is headed to the back of the cabinet for special occasions. For a more frequent overproofed sipper, I'll stick with the OGD 114 and save $20/bottle.

Cranecreek (2016-08-04):
I have been debating whether to get this Stagg or a bottle of Blantons or another high quality choice. I see you gave it 5 stars, but as I read between the lines did you find it a little wanting? Did it live up to what you expected? Glad you are liking the OGD114 and due to you I will be posting a review for Benchmark8 which i finally found.

BDanner (2016-08-05):
I definitely found this one wanting. I very rarely stray above my $40/bottle limit, and when I do perhaps I expect too much. I debated between 4 & 5 on this one, but in the end felt like I was punishing it for not meeting my expectations and not the quality. I've also seen a couple of reviewers on other sites mention that this years release definitely had an extra astringent note that was not in previous years releases. I have also decided that the next time I break my $40 rule it's going to be on a bottle of Blanton's.

Cranecreek (2016-08-07):
Made up my mind and purchased the Blantons-bottle #124-barrel#437-1-7-16-(review to come)

KaiserSoze (2016-09-12):
Sorry you were a little disappointed with this one BDanner. I actually just stumbled across a bottle this weekend for $50 after searching feverishly for the past 18 months. I can’t tell you the number of times store clerks laughed in my face when I asked if they had any in stock or were expecting to get any in! Anyway, I’ve had 1 pour and I thought it was out of this world! Mine is a tick lower on the heat at 132 proof, so maybe that’s why I didn’t pick up any astringent notes? I’m going to wait a while and see how the bottle progress before I post my review. I’ve never had OGD 114 but will give a try sometime upon your recommendation. If you want to try a couple other high proof bourbons, Knob Creek Single Barrel (120 proof) is the same price as Stagg Jr and is also excellent. Bookers will run you about $10 more and is another great option that runs in the 130+ proof. Cheers!

BDanner (2016-09-12):
Glad you liked it! Disappointed might be a little too strong of a word for something I gave 5 stars to. I'm hoping that trying a couple different levels of dilution will help me enjoy it more. Knob Creek and Booker's are both on my to try list. Let us know what you think of the OGD 114 if you can find it. At $30, it's a great bargain!

Cranecreek (2016-09-28):
I think if your Stagg and my Blantons made time together the result would be just right! (Blantons review is up)

To preface, this is a very good bourbon. That said, I was expecting much more from it. At cask strength, the alcohol does tend to be a bit overpowering. An ice cube makes it just right. Very complex flavor- lots and lots of bitter oak with a dose of spice and a good bit of smoke. Plenty of other, more subtle flavors. Straight up, the bitterness of the oak dominates a tad too much for my taste. Even diluted a tad, it is just too bitter- it needs some of the other flavors to be more emphasized to more properly balance the bitter oak. Even some less bitter oak notes- more vanilla and char- could make it just right. It is still a very good bourbon and one I would definitely recommend to try. Luckily, it is not super expensive- though it is more expensive than some of my favorites that I like better.

My thoughts on this one as well. Hopefully next year's release will not be so bitter oak dominated.

This is my first bottle of Stagg Jr. And I have to say it is so concentrated and thick almost oily. The first taste I put it down and went back to the store and got me another bottlebefore it was gone and at 46$. Before I was lucky enough to find Stagg jr I thought I was in heaven with my favorite Eagle Rare. But the Stagg Jr was so much better than anything I have ever tried. So full of flavor.

This and Booker's are my high octane standards. I love them both. Stagg definitely has noticeably more caramel and less pure corn character, but it's fantastically smooth and delicious. I almost always drink everything neat, and it would be a personal travesty to add water to this nectar. Really fantastic stuff with a finish that goes on forever.

The tastiest rocket fuel on the market. The magic of this stuff is that you would never know it was so potent if you didn't read the label, and it tastes like a caramel apple smoked over a cherrywood campfire. It makes excellent cocktails as well, and has the presence to really stand out in a mixture. Any fool can make a high proof spirit, but only a craftsman could make one like this that has every rough edge smoothed out. It's hot on the tongue, sure, but velvet smooth on the belly. I was genuinely tempted to give it an awful review so that fewer people will buy it and leave more for me.

I found this for $49 in fla. I approached it wirh trepidation due to 132 proof. I must say. I am shocked at how little alcohol burn it has. The nose is a wonderful mix of fruit, vanilla, brown sugar and is a deep amber. Like a maple syrup. The tast is oily and full. There is sweetness of a pecan pie. A light spice amd creaminess. It has a nice long finish. If you lile the fullness of flavor of say Elijah then you will love this. It is truly wonderful.

4.35/5, an edgy but delicious cask strength bourbon. I had this a couple days before I had Noah's mill. Stagg Jr is more on the oak. I agree with Muncher in that it is essentially a better version of Booker's in my opinion. There is certainly still a little edge and heat in this bad boy (something I don't mind at all) but it has better balance than booker's. Bottomline: if you like cask strength bourbon then this is one you should try (if you like bookers then this is one you NEEED to try). Definitely try Noah's Mill too though!

Did a side by side with my bottle of Booker's with no ice or water. They are quite similar, but the Stagg Jr clearly outshines the Booker's. Stagg Jr has much better balance, without the excessive tannins that detract in the Booker's, allowing the vanilla and sweet notes to be enjoyed. The balance is so good, that even at 134.4 proof I can enjoy a glass without any ice or water. Just awesome.
