Proof66 Notes

Tyrconnell was originally named for a racehorse who won at 100:1 odds Irish National Produce Stakes. The name is translated from Gaelic as "land of O'Donnell". It was at one time produced at the Watts Distillery but closed in 1925.

Famously balanced and well done. Worth the extra $10 to get this over the regular label Jameson.

I had been eyeing Tyrconnell's whiskies for a while based on some solid reviews, and I bought this particular bottle recently. This is a very good whiskey, and unlike many more well-known Irish whiskies, is quite robust. It still has the delicate nature of Irish whiskey, but that aspect comes through in its feel moreso than its flavor. It is satin smooth to the tongue - impressively so for its price - and its flavor is a blend of oak and peppery spice, with a medium rare beefy, oily finish and a touch of sherry bearnaise. There is no burn, though it tricks your brain into recalling a hint of that sensation without actually bringing you there. While this whiskey appears not to have great depth, it makes up for any such shortcomings with an interesting playfulness. This is a whiskey that you have with a hearty meal, and probably doubly so for the fall and winter months. This one is remarkable for the price, and I anxiously await the opportunity to try one of Tyrconnell's other 3 styles
