Proof66 Notes

William Larue (or "WL") Weller bourbons are considered "wheated" bourbons named for William Weller who—according to Bourbon Enthusiast—first began making bourbon with wheat instead of rye. To our mind, this creates a bourbon with a softer, subtler flavor profile that is not as robust but not as spicy as rye grain. These bourbons are generally unfiltered, giving them a chewy feel and a haze if drunk with ice.

My new favorite wheated bourbon! Move over Makers Mark. This one's about $7 cheaper. Great color and a nose that's heavy sweet with a hint of tangerine. Enters thick, chewy and sweet. Cinnamon candy with a short, hot, tingly finish. Limited char or barrel funk. A cube of ice does bring some oak into the mix and tones down the finish a notch. Enjoyed equally neat or on the rocks, in fact this one seems made to handle ice melt. It's nitpicking, but the bottle and labeling are hella' ugly (looks like they've addressed this with a new label and bottle design as of Sept 2016). Be careful with this one, it's so good the 107 proof sneaks up on you.

This is the best bourbon you can get now for under $30 (I paid $26). I only wish I would have bought another bottle as it continues to fly off the shelves in my area. Very soft, pleasant aroma of fresh baked bread, caramel, & vanilla. The initial entry on the palate is very sweet and smooth with more vanilla and caramel...then you are blasted with cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices. The added alcohol content really packs a wallop! Will definitely buy again (if I can find)!

An amazing bargain on a delicious bourbon! This bourbon brings appropriate heat but is one that can be sipped neat. There is definite cinnamon on the finish that balances out a pleasing sweetness and oak presence as you first sip it.

This is a fabulous boubin. Every time I drink it I pick up different notes. Where this really shines is with an ice ball that little bit dilution bring out the flavor, sweet ,caramel, vanilla, oak that is way too easy to drink. The purist may scoff at the ice ball but at 107 proof it holds up.

Absolutely beautiful bourbon. In my opinion, you will NOT find a better bottle of bourbon under 30 dollars. After a bottle of FR yellow label, EC 12 year, this has been a perfect change of pace. The wheat here makes all the difference-it is so approachable, so smooth. The nose brings to me, raisins, sweet brown sugar, earthy kicks of sweet wood. The mouthfeel is buttery, more dried fruit, sugar sugar sugar. Oddly, its not a cloying, disgusting sweetness, more of a rich smoky spice cake sweetness on the tongue. Plenty of oak in the finish, lingers much longer than I anticipated for a wheater. Btw, this, in my amateur opinion, makes the most delightful old fashioned, so smooth and balanced. Easily the best bourbon Ive ever had-definitely beats the "mainstream" wheater, makers. Would purchase still even at 40 a bottle.

Very nice. Initial drink is strong but later shots are smooth and lovely. Drink with ice.

This is the sweetest, thickest bourbon that I've had thus far. I would prefer a step up in the oak, spice, and char, but I'm a sucker for the bold and this whiskey definitely is a bold take on a wheated bourbon. It's extremely easy to drink this one quickly so be careful ladies and gents!

Tried for the first time tonight, I enjoy the smoothness of the wheat without the bite of rye. The proof really hits you at first but enables it to stand up to the ice. It lacks the sweetness or toffee I really like, but has nice oak.

One of my favorite bourbons and a great value. I'm inclined to prefer wheated bourbons to ryes or even more balanced offerings, and this is my favorite wheater under $50. It's a bit better that Bernheim, offering a bit more bite, but without the burn you'd suspect at a relatively strong proof. It remains mellow compared to more rye laden mashbills, while offering plenty to enjoy.  Definitely more intriguing than Makers.  It's a great neat sipper (I'd say 95% of my consumption has been neat) , and a solid mixer. It's my go to flask filler (high proof helps give you more bang per oz). Too bad I need to ship it to Ohio.
