Proof66 Notes

Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon is the high-proof expression from the well-respected Austin Nichols distillery. They claim to take a very slow and traditional approach in the making of this bourbon and where other distilleries may come in with a high proof and blend their product down with more water (typical bourbons are 80-90 proof), Wild Turkey 101 comes out of the barrel at a comparatively weak 109 and blended with very little water to make the final 101. This, they say, allows them "to retain the true characteristics" of the bourbon.

Wild Turkey 101 has consistent quality since I was introduced to it in 1970's.The only thing has changed is age statement. It was 8 years old before age statement was removed. The nose is rich oak, spice, pipe tobacco , and cola.. The enrty is warm with caramel, pepper like , spice, oak with vanilla, cola , and spice finish.A classic bourbon full of taste like 8 year 101 Wild Turkey but less refined..

As crazy as the popularity of bourbon has become recently, it's nice to see the price on this wonderful drink remain so low. $21 in my area and would gladly pay twice this much! Very unique flavor of dry spice, honey, and green apple. The best value in bourbon and most definitely in the top 5 for best value of any spirit.

Picked up a couple 50 Mls to try. Nice medium Amber color. Nose is pleasantly sweet with a hint of spice. Nice thick mouthfeel. Nice sweetness followed by a spicy rye kick. Minimal char. Rough but pleasant "fiery" finish. A little "unsophisticated". Tastes young? Ice smooths it out. Brings out some subtle char. Tames the finish. I preferred this one on the rocks. Shell out the extra cash for the Rare Breed, which despite its higher proof, is infinitely smoother. 3 stars.

BDanner (2016-08-01):
A reviewer on another site suggested adding two tsps of spring water to a dram of this and allowing it to sit for about 5 minutes. This really brought out some nuance that was missing in this one neat. Now there is just about always a bottle of this in my cabinet. Not only do I enjoy it with a splash, but I really like it in two ingredient cocktails where the WT oaky "funk" really punches through whatever your mixing it with.

I think Wild Turkey Bourbons have a place in the world of Bourbons, but I am not to sure where that place is. It had/has a reputation as being sub-par which I think is undeserved. it is peppery" but it is also "bright" and contains nice bourbon flavors. It is mindful of Woodfords with excellent flavors of baking spices and creamy Cinnamon spiced Vanilla pudding, but has that over the top spicy/pepperiness. I enjoy it at times when a "hotter" Bourbon is desired but for me that is not often.

BDanner (2016-01-14):
At the suggestion of a reviewer on another site, I diluted a pour of this with two teaspoons of spring water (he insisted it had to be spring water) and let it sit for 5 minutes. I found that it increased my appreciation of this one a great deal (I like you found it a little too "spicy" and also gave it 3 stars). Makes me wonder if this one wouldn't be better served bottled at 90'ish proof?

PiggDogg (2016-07-11):
[1] During summer 2015 here in New Orleans, I had the pleasure to attended a WT tasting with both Jimmy & Eddie Russell, with Eddie giving the presentation. Among a large number of topics that Eddie touched upon, he was clear that both Jimmy, Eddie, & the WT powers feel, insist, & work so that WT is best sold at 101 proof. For them, 101 proof is WT’s best ABV. ----- [2] Indeed, these people nose, taste, & work with WT each day. They have more experience with their WT than anyone else. They are the WT experts. Also, it is also their job and passion to produce the best WT whiskey possible. While doing this foregoing, they strive to make the most money for WT in the long term. They do all this while maintaining their high standards. ----- [3] If these WT experts decide upon something concerning WT, I’ll go with their expertise. WT is best at 101 proof, because those with the greatest proprietary interest have decided so.

BDanner (2016-07-29):
PiggDogg...I shouldn't have made it sound as if I was questioning anyone's expertise in the bourbon making field, especially someone as knowledgeable as the Russells. I guess what I should've conveyed is that I didn't care for this bourbon until I added some water. It has nothing to do with proof per se (as two of my favorite bourbons are Rare Breed and OGD 114).

Even though this is available pretty much everywhere, the price hasn't budged in the last 15 years, this is still a quality spirit. Personally I always liked Wild Turkey 101, even in my misspent youth when I was all about whiskey shooters. They don't call this "The Kickin' Chicken" for nothing, as it kicked my ass on several occasions. That being said, now that I've grown up some and learned that whiskey is for sipping rather than pounding, I actually find this to be a surprisingly smooth spirit. Sipped neat, it doesn't so much burn as tingle. The tasting notes I get are warm, grassy, woody, sweet, faint rye, and a lot of corn (I can taste more corn and grass in Turkey 101 than any bourbon short of Hudson's Baby Bourbon, a 2 year old 100% corn spirit), and a slightly funky (but not unpleasant) flavor I can't describe more specifically than "barnyard". I feel that the 101 has kind of a hidden double meaning as Wild Turkey is basically the gateway spirit for cask strength bourbon. The secret to this spirit's flavor is primarily the fact that they distill to a very low proof (125 when they are allowed to go as high as 150) and then age to an even lower proof (just 109) allowing them to bottle the spirit with very little added water. They amp up the flavor even further by using the heaviest possible (#4 "Allligator) char on their barrels. Smoothness is maintained (and flavor probably further enhanced) by making up the blend form 6,7, and 8 year old whiskies, which means this stuff is considerably older than say Jim Beam or Jack Daniels. Austin Nichols also claims a "high rye" mashbill is used, but the best guess I've seen is 12 or 13% rye, which is actually pretty average. Anyway, this is probably the best quality Bourbon that you'll be able to find in pretty much ANY bar anywhere, and I highly recommend it so long as you're smart enough to sip it. 4.5 stars.

"The cork and the initial nose smelled soured. I let an ounce sit in the glass after tasting for about 30 minutes, and now can smell that soured smell, which is identical to mold. I can smell it just walking by the glass. So, my bottle may be crap." Tasting: Weak nose (in glass), but some vanilla with 4 drops of water, and just a hint of oak. Peppery and not sweetish. The pepper persists and the palate finds a bit of oak, a little vanilla and not much else. Old Grand Dad Bonded is sweeter but also peppery and $10 cheaper where I am. A large slug brings a cough that other 100 proofs don't. Lack of a nose, not much on the palate but pepper and a rough finish means this is a one-bottle adventure. If its your favourite, Good on ya! On into the dram, the oak begins to come through. In several weeks, with some "air" in the bottle, it may change. I just don't find anything to make me come back. But, it is bourbon, and all bourbon is "good".

I don't know if I can overstate this. This a great bourbon and a great value. Even if you're experimenting with something more exotic and expensive, you should still have this on hand. For new bourbon drinkers, just try it. If I had $22 and could spend it on one bourbon, this is it. Just be careful as it packs a punch.

Wild Turkey 101 is the benchmark, the standard from which all other bourbons are judged. This beloved spirit isn't nicknamed "The Kickin' Chicken," "The Dirty Bird," or "Whiskey Tango" for nothing. The savory aroma is muted, with just a subtle hint of sweetness. The taste is rich and varied, changing from toasty oak and soft vanilla, to butterscotch and a touch of lemon. I also taste a bit of, pepper, and caramel. The finish is long and rich with spice and toast notes. Forget 81, Forget Rye, forget Rare Breed, forget Kentucky Spirit, and forget American Honey. For the price, you can't get a better bourbon than Wild Turkey 101...it's where its at.

One of my preferred bourbons (one of my favorite liquor brands infact) with everything i want in a liquor: Bold, smooth, high-proof and medium complexity. Has notes of rich oranges, vanilla, mustard, oak and spices. This to me though, is more of shooter than sipper, and is great for having fun all night. Personally i like to pair this with very spicy foods.

Lots and lots of ice. Pour over top of ice and drink. I enjoy others but this seems to be my go to when it is bourbon night with my brother. Some spice and let leaves a nice flavor.

I'm not a fan of the spicy or peppery bourbons. For those people who do, this bourbon is for you. Even with a little water or Ginger Ale, you're going to notice the peppery taste. Some ice mellows it out, but you still can taste the spice.Whiskey sour would work nice with this stuff.

I'll be completely honest I love 101... It has a spiciness that I find to be really pleasant. Its smooth, and I don't feel much of a burn that most expect form a higher proof spirit.

I used to not care for the Dirty Bird--the burn was a little too much for me. Perhaps I'm a little more refined? I dunno, but this is a good bourbon at a good price.

Excellent value. Full flavored, sweet, with plenty of rye spiciness. It has a lot of oak and barrel char in the flavor profile, but not to the point that it's out of balance. I don't know how anyone can completely dislike this one. I think it's delicious. It's like America's Corryvreckan.

This is not good. It is very strong with a lot of burn. It has a very wood heavy, bitter aftertaste that sticks in your mouth for 10 minutes. A splash of water cleans it up some, but the aftertaste is still there. I don't recommend it.

Extremely underrated bourbon. Maybe the name conjures up images of a rowdy group of backwoodsman - moonshiners. Not so. This has a very smooth, sweet, spicy nose and a gentle, warm finish. I agree with a previous post by a gentleman who recommended not mixing this with anything. It stands on its own - although you might not if you sip too fast. Excellent.

I guess I'm an oddity. The higher the price I pay for bourbon the less I seem to like it. I've tried some expensive bourbons and cannot say I liked them very well. Wild Turkey 101 however is another breed of cat. When sipped as one should it has proven to be an outstanding product. Far above average. This is a product I'm not ashamed to serve with friends. I never mix bourbon. If you have to mix it you need to look for another bourbon. This is an honest product that doesn't hide anything.

Surprised this on hasn't been rated more. This is just plain, honest, good bourbon at a very nice price. It has a nice deep sweetness and just enough brash heat. This bourbon, Evan Williams 1792, and Old Charter 10-year all fill a well-loved niche for me.

Very good bourbon at a good price. This is also very common. This is my going out bourbon simply because it is available at almost every bar and is cheap. This is one of my favorites.
