Proof66 Notes

The Willett Rye is bottled at Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (though the whiskey itself is sourced at MPG (formerly LDI) in Indiana, according to the Sour Mash Manifesto). It is aged and selected from a "single barrel" suggesting the whiskey is chosen from one particular barrel and bottled without blending. As

The measuring sticks of rye in my book, simple and clean.

Peppery rye spice dominates, but with light citrus notes coming through and a light vanilla overlay, which tames the alcohol bite to a fair degree. Better then Thomas Handy, in my view. In short, its smooth and quite delicious, which is not something I say about most ryes that I have tried. It does taste a little young, but its amazing what the distiller was able to do with only four years of age. The five star rating is based on value, in part.

Outstanding rye, spicy with great citrus notes. A little hot, but improves a lot with a bit of water. Similar to the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Thomas Handy - not quite as good but its affordable and much more readily available than the Handy.

Ive been drinking a 4-year old bottle of this for some months and have really enjoyed it. At 110 proof, it works better with a small amount of water or a couple of cubes of ice. I drink it neat as well, but the flavors are so much better with a half ounce of water. This is a spicy young rye with great flavor and not for someone who is looking for a smooth whiskey. If you like a bold rye or rye-forward bourbon, then this is great stuff. Ill be opening a 5-year bottle soon and will add another review for that one.
