Proof66 Notes

Yamazaki 12yr Japanese whisky is, of course, the 12yr version of the whisky and is one of the younger whiskeys developed by the critically acclaimed distillery. They suggest looking for flavor notes of cranberry, coconut, and butter.

I'm a sucker for Japanese oak and the delicious aroma of oak from Hokkaido is here in abundance! But we're not done yet as the beautifully tangy aroma of Japanese oak is followed by it's peppery-citrus taste. Following in the Scotch-like traditions of Japanese whisky, this is a good dram for the novice and advanced student alike. The peppery tangyness of the Japanese oak aging DANCES on the tip of your tongue like a fun Kabuki and is just as entertaining. It's a very clean, crisp taste that is balanced near perfectly and has a polite but dignified long finish with a pleasant slow fade. You need this in your life! A little pricey, but worth the spend. If you like a nice highland but want some adventure, I'd recommend going here as it will be exotic enough to stay interesting without being so totally foreign as to be unpleasant.

4.5 stars, I'll be totally honest, this is my first Japanese whiskey. Having tasted the stark differences between bourbon, smokey scotch, Irish whiskey, and other whiskey's I really wasn't quite sure what to expect from Japanese whiskey. This is great. I found it easily similar to a lower grade macallan 18 which is high praise for any 12. With whiskey this good I'm almost afraid to try others because while I went into this with no expectations I can promise you that the next Japanese whisky I try is going to be compared against a beast in the category

4.7 stars delicious, very smooth & well balanced, bit fruity, bit spice, with a long sweet finish. the kind of whisky you can drink all night. good value?tough to say, hp 12 is roughly as good but far cheaper..so may be not but should be in the home bar for the ocassional sip.

My first and only Japanese whisky. Very grainy and very lively flavor. I mixed with cold water. $50

I do not understand this one.  It is the complete opposite of smoothe - more like drinking barbed wire.  Surprisingly bad, actually.

SirDeath (2016-10-06):
A Scotch in everything but trade name. Mr. Taketsurusan (the father of Japanese whisky) married a Scot and studied in Scotland keeping true to Scotch roots with Asian influences. Since not from Scotland, it's technically not a Scotch, but can easily hold its own with Scotlands top-tier offerings.

To my pleasant surprise Japan is home to a great distillery, Yamazaki, owned by the Suntory conglomerate. Matter of fact, this distillery was the first single malt distillery established outside of Scotland. It was founded in 1923 in the Vale of Yamazaki, on the outskirts of Kyoto. The site was selected for its access to fresh air, pure water and ideal humidity for aging whisky in casks. The bottle came in a classic whisky presentation, requiring the reverent opening of a stately box, wrapped in tissue and with a small information booklet brimming with the requisite hyperbolic history and descriptions. Unscrewing the cap (sorry, no cork to pop) the aroma released is fruity with a hint of caramel In the famous words of Bill Murray For relaxing times, make it Suntory time. (Lost in Translation)
