Proof66 Notes

Cardenal Mendoza Brandy is named in honor of Pedro Gonzales de Mendoza who in the 15th century was key political figure in Spain helping to lobby for the Columbus voyage to the Indies (bumping into America along the way) and in his time was archbishop and Grand of Spain. The brandy was first produced in 1887 and is aged in the solera method, which means a small part of the oldest cask is left unbottled to mix with the next oldest suggesting that some elements of every bottle are (or could be) over 100 years old. (We think of it as knowing there is a tiny amount of the very first tank of gas still in your car 10 or 20 years later.) The Carta Real expression was first laid down in 1981, yielding very old brandies in the solera method.
