Proof66 Notes

Christian Brothers is generally associated as a brand of brandy founded in 1882 based upon California grape varietals. The brand is owned by a company called CB Vineyards of Kentucky but, according to the filing with the US Tax and Trade Bureau, sourced from Heaven Hill Distilleries whom we show here as the producer. We guess that the wine is produced in California and then shipped and distilled at Heaven Hill.

A tight budget mixing choice, or experimenting in making a liqueur. I didn't handle it right, but I ended up with a slap together Grand Marnier(An orange suspended over the brandy, sugar added in a glass jar method. Was only in there for less than a week, got worried about it being steamy. Tasted a touch better, with some orange. Oh well, will have to try again in the future). As for Christian Brothers VS, it's all right. Raisin, cinnamon, caramel are the flavors; nosing it....it's just brandy. Finish is a bit icky but you get used to it. I say, mix it or experiment like I almost did. But, Lo and behold!, if you think this is a bad brandy, there's an even worst one by Heaven Hill named 1889 Royal Brandy VS. Either made out of terrible stocks of Christian Brothers VS or terrible stocks and neutral spirit with sugar added- that brandy is most assuredly pure taint.

Very similar in both taste and price to E & J, so flip a coin. Decent, low cost mixer. Not a sipping spirit.

My go-to for regular brandy for mixing. It is harsh and on the dry side but with decent flavors. It is not a fine cognac or really a fine anything. I get this stuff for about $6 when I am in the Napa region (where it is produced) and at that price is a great deal. Drinking it straight is fine but just not great. A bit floral. I made a rose-pedal infusion with a bottle that worked great.

Nice color.  Aromas of fruit and oak, and hazelnut.  Tastes of Oak and smoke and somethng that I can't quite put my finger on.  almost no complexity.  With Brandy you get what you pay for.  In my opinion theres nothing "Very Special" about this one.

I tried a bit of this during a hliday function once. The only stand-out thing about its character was that it had a rather horrid taste of rubber for the finish. I've heard that such effects in alcohol are a sign of less than stellar processing techniques. Not surprising, given the price of this stuff. Because of this, I can't recommend it, especially since it was the only memorable quality it had. I'd say avoid this one.
