Fernet Branca Liqueur

Bottle/Rating Data

Proof66 Notes

Fernet Branca is a bitters liqueur first made in 1845 and launched what would become the international company of Fratelli Branca. It is a blend of a what they describe as "dozens of herbs and spices from our continents." Some of these spices are said to include bitter aloe, gentian, chamomile, angelica, quinine, colombo root, rhubarb, myrrh, peppermint, cinnamon, saffron, and others. It is aged for a full year in oak barrels prior to bottling, which will impart additional color and flavor to the spirit (very unusual in the bitters liqueur world).

It reminds me of my mint toothpaste and while I like mint teas, I would not really drink this except well diluted in a cocktail. I don't think I will buy again because of the price.

I live in Argentina and this is the most popular liqueur among young people. Nobody would never think of drinking this stuff without Coca Cola. The mix is one part Fernet and five parts of Coca Cola. It's the guest that never misses any party, dinner with the inlaws, the park, the club, [place any social gathering here].

This aperitif surely fills the needs of some audience. Its just not an audience Im a part of. I tried a sampler of this one, and mint chocolate cough syrup is the best I can come up with. The taste is decidedly medicinal to me, but it drinks like a quality liquor: No burn, smooth feel, and strong flavor. Its just not me though, and is probably the single oddest liquor Ive yet had. This didnt make me anxious to try their other one, Fernet Branca Menta.
