In Cancun, Mexico, over the course of February 2 through February 8, six judges from all over the world assessed eighty different tequilas in the inaugural Agave Spirits Challenge.
There were four levels of judging with the potential of being awarded a Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal.
We regard these as excellent forums for watching the performance of liquors. To enter these events - especially inaugural ones - the distiller needs to be pretty confident in his product. These specialized events where only agave-based spirits are being judged against each other creates a special kind of milieu and a special kind of judge.
And what the hell: we really like contests and we love contests that take place in Cancun in February.
The results were as follows.
None of these spirits have entries on Proof66 at this time - none have been submitted for judging at any of the three rating agencies we follow - but we have taken the time to update all of the tequilas that received medals in our database. Of particular note were the performance of the tequilas offered by Familia Partida, Dos Lunas, and Hacienda de Chihuahua Sotol among others. We highly recommend checking out this website to review all of the winning spirits.
Just like everywhere in life, Elitism Rules. It rules for tequila as well. For everyone who claims that they hate tequila or only get sick from drinking tequila have probably only taken shots of lousy tequila and probably haven't done that since college. Check out one of these tequilas, give them a chance, and we think you'll be shocked at the subtlety and the character of these spirits.
Proof66 is pleased to announce its next testing on Saturday, February 28th. We will be testing liqueurs-all kinds of liqueurs-in a variety of formats. If you would like to make sure your particular liqueur is a part of this tasting, please Contact Us for shipping information of a couple bottles. We'll be happy to give it a shot! (No pun intended.)
