Proof66 Notes

Ron Abuelo 12yr rum is, of course, aged for 12 years and is their oldest expression.
In our own tasting of this spirit at the Tasting Panel 2010 Chicago Tour we said, "It probably would appeal a great deal to more traditional rum drinkers and serve up more subtly in sweeter cocktails like the mojito.

(4 out of 5). An excellent rum, one of my favorites in the ~$30 range. On the nose I get vanilla, maple, and oak, and on the palate it is sweet, but not syrupy and overdone like some of its competitors. Well aged, nicely presented, and a pleasure to sip. $34 or so in my area.

Fantastic! Slightly sweet with just the right amount of vanilla. The oak casks do this rum well - it is fabulous!

A lovely stately expression of a rum. Very complex and nicely dry. Unlike many of their competitors Abuelo did not make a sweet, syrupy and heavy expression of a old rum. This rum is complex in a lovely subdued and dry way, showing it's age with grace and sophistication.

At The Rum Project (link follows) Sue Sea and I have reviewed over 120 rums. The Abuelos were among the first. If you like classic rum flavors and deep, sweet heat you'll love the 12 year. Neither the Anejo, the 7 Year or the 12 year are particularly expensive, so it's possible to buy all three and see what aging can do for a good rum. For a nice overview of all three, and many more honest reviews, check here... http://rumproject.com/rumforum//viewtopic.php?p=414#414
