Proof66 Notes

TOPO Vodka is made from a base of 100% certified organic wheat... a grain base that is a popular style in French and Russian vodkas. To us, this means it will give the vodka a very smooth, slightly astringent, and neutral quality.

I found a couple bottles of this as closeouts. The nose is faintly reminiscent of shellac vapor (not overpowering but there), likely some of the esters "making fragrant". Just in this case, not fruity or flowery. The tongue and palate know it is somewhat like vodka and retaining some in the mouth does not give off that sugary flourish some European vodkas have. However, there is a back taste which shouldn't be there in a true vodka. Since the chap heading this up was a beer crafter first, there may be some exotic yeasts being employed, etc. The wheat source is organic and certified. However, no word on the water (60% is water) or its source. Eastern and Central NC waters are commonly polluted with PCBs and mercury, and other deadly goodies, like the various compounds from coal ash, so the water source should be revealed. That nose is going to interfere with sippers such as I, since you know its there even when the glass is some inches away and heading for the mouth. I expect that is why this was as closeout, as there likely aren't many repeat purchasers. With the whisky, the oak can cover much over, where as vodka should be a true rectified product, most of the odors apart from the ethanol "absent". Vodka needs to be taken to 190 proof or it ain't vodka. I didn't pickup wheat or grass - only the likely esters and a not pleasant odor. Not worth the trip. Two neat reusable bottles from the deal is about the sum of it.

TOPO Vodka. I had tried their gin in the past and didn't care for it, but when checking out at the ABC store the other day I noticed that they had 50ml bottles of the vodka, so I decided to pick up a few and give it a try. I discovered that my problem with their gin is not in any of the botanicals that they use, but with the base spirit itself. I like a vodka to have character, but the heavy "grassy/wheaty" taste and nose of this wheat based vodka is too much. Instead of complimenting or enhancing a cocktail, it overpowers it. However, one bright spot (as with the TOPO gin) was a dry martini. The heavy wheat must pair well with vermouth. I appreciate that it's local (all the wheat used in their spirits is sourced from within a 100 mile radius of their distillery), but if I'm going purchase a local vodka, I would choose the Covington Vodka (made with surplus Eastern NC sweet potatoes) over this one every time.
