I first bought this about 4 years ago when it first came out. As a Texas resident, I wanted it to be so good. It wasn't. I did not really care for it at the time and ended up giving the bottle away to a bunch of unwashed hippies (really). Fast forward 4 years later and I was in Specs trying to decide on my next bourbons to get, and the store "expert" suggested 1835. I told him I tried it before and did not really like it. He then told me, and it was probably horseshit, that the first 2 years of product was actually made by someone else (he said Wild Turkey), but now their own stuff has finally aged and this is what is in it. Well it still fails to live up to what I wish. Nose: it's sharp. This probably breathes out gas/fumes more than any other whiskey I've ever had. Caramel is the biggest note, but almost everything else is covered up by the sharp almost rubbing alcohol hit from the ethanol. Taste: sharp taste. Reminds me of some homemade whiskey I had where the maker said he made it like they did in the old west. Numbs quite a bit of the mouth. It's complex, but again the ethanol fights off identifying what the true flavors may be. Aftertaste: the numbness may linger. Also a slight licorice aftertaste around the throat. When a whiskey is so sharp and almost medicinal I cut it with a sweet soda like 7up. I did that with this one and it was much better. The sweet mellows it out and removes the burn. This is how I will finish the bottle.

I am really giving this a 2.95 rating. The best non Kentucky bourbon I have tasted. Better than I expected. Smooth mild finish. It was a Christmas gift.

This a good whiskey with very complex flavors. I like a lot of different kinds of whiskey not just one or two. It does not taste like Buffalo Trace, so if you have a limited range of appreciation and prefer that approach to bourbon, you probably will not appreciate 1835. I like to drink my bourbon neat and I enjoyed the taste of the 1835. When I got it I had three other bourbons, including Buffalo Trace, in my cabinet and the 1835 got drank up first. Looking at the range of reviews for this whiskey it is easy to see why the site is wise not to give much credence to the rabble. Being smart enough to leave a review does not make one a good reviewer of spirit quality. As an experienced homebrew judge, I know that personal taste preference is one of the least important considerations of judging merit, particularly if one has a narrow preference range or an inexperienced palate.

This was recommended to me by one of the chain store reps. This has got to be the worst bourbon Ive ever had. I like 1792 and Buffalo Trace. This stuff just plain smelled awful...

Don't let the big chain store sucker you into wasting your money. This stuff is pricey paint thinner!

Thoroughly pleasing, very smooth and flavorful without an overbearing aspect. I enjoy it straight up, or with an ice cube in the August-September time frame.

I did not like this. My usual drink is 1792 and I found this to be lacking in any flavor whatsoever. I gave the bottle away.
