Proof66 Notes

George Dickel Barrel Select whisky is a premium expression where a mere 10 barrels are personally selected by the master distiller to "produce the finest batch of Tennessee Whisky in the land."

The Beverage Testing Institute called this a "dynamic and flashy Tennessee whisky" in their 2012 review.

George Dickel Tennessee whiskies are made with a mash bill (whose proportions are secret) of barley, rye, and corn.

Not getting the more complex flavors described below- maybe it is just my bottle. I suspect this is the case as mine clocks in at 86 proof, not the 103 described below. In any event, I found the whiskey to be nice and flavorful, if a tinge simple. I taste a lot of bittersweet oak with some cinnamon (not the hazelnut described by others) and a tinge of smoke. Sweetness is at an almost perfect level for me- it lingers just a touch more than I tend to prefer. The texture is a bit oily, though I would not go so far as to describe it as buttery or creamy (though I can certainly see how others would be tasting that, perhaps more so in a different bottle). Alcohol burn is negligible; the stuff is quite smooth. Got my bottle for $30, which I consider to be a great deal.

My bottle says "Hand Selected Barrel" bottled exclusively for Macadoodles in Arkansas. Fantastic whiskey, and kicked up a notch to 103 proof. I had to go back for another bottle the moment I tasted it. should have bought 3 more! Complex, flavorful, a step up from Dickel's standard bottlings which i also find very good.

This is good! I'd give it 4.5 if we could give 1/2's. Nice light copper color. Dried bananas and burnt popcorn on the unique nose, with a hint of cinnamon and brown sugar. Neat it starts out with char and banana cream (I pick up the banana cream on all Dickels), followed by buttered popcorn and hazelnut (thanks Irishman, I was having trouble identifying that one until I read your review). Just a hint of warmth going down, but this one is overly smooth. Hazelnut lingers on the palate. This one would probably get 5 stars if it were about $10 cheaper and they replaced the rubber stopper with real cork. This one is headed to the back of the cabinet for special occasions.

I would have given this 3.5 stars if we could do half a star. It's very drinkable, but at $45-$50, it's tough to keep t stocked in the bar. The flavor profile has the traditional Tennessee whiskey charcoal, although it is mellowed out quite a bit. What I can't get past is the hazelnut flavor that shoots straight through everything else and really just gets in the way. Not off-putting, but not expected either. All in all, I would buy it once, but I wouldn't go to long distances to seek it out.

A much better Tennessee whiskey than anything short of a few single barrel JD which varies WILDLY. Best with an ice cube. Sweet corn with some earthy charcoal. Good value for the price.

Underrated whisky (that's how they spell it there). Lots of corn and barrel influence in the flavor profile. I believe the mash recipe is 80+ percent corn and the rest split evenly between rye and barley. Really is quite delicious. My favorite Tennessee whiskey followed closely by JD Single Barrel. I really can't believe Gentleman Jack is at the top of this category as it tastes like watered down JD #7.
