Proof66 Notes

Jefferson's Ocean Aged Bourbon is takes their bourbon and ages it in barrels on ocean-going vessels, where the movement and salt-air both lend a particular flavor to the bourbon. They claim the bourbon visits 5 continents and crosses the equator 4 times before bottling. The whiskey itself is sourced from Paramount Distillers of Ohio according to the 2013 filing with the federal Tax and Trade Bureau.

I tried both the Ocean Aged and the Groth Reserve (Cabernet cask finish) at a whiskey bar and my experience is completely different than Phizbin's with this bourbon. I thought the Jefferson's Ocean was fantastic. It's balanced, refined, and completely enjoyable from the aroma on through the finish. It has pretty standard bourbon characteristics, but with the addition of one unique component: saltiness. I don't know if the time spent on the ocean actually added salt to the whiskey, but this seems like the saltiest bourbon that I've had to date. It's quite complimentary; kind of similar to how salt enhances the flavor of caramel. I was hesitant before because of the price in my area ($69), but I think I'll snatch up a bottle of my own when I'm at the store next.

Great story. Who can't love a spirit that's visited 5 continents? That, by itself, is really cool and almost worth having a bottle around just for the story. The bourbon inside, though... the initial taste is a bit of wood, cocoa, and a kind of odd citrus note. That's interesting. But with a little ice and time, it develops a kind of salty, sour note. Bourbons I like get better the more I drink it. This one was the opposite. That, coupled with the high price, forces my rating down a bit. It might mix well but I didn't get that far. I'd buy it for a beach home just to have it around!
