American Whiskey - Bourbon

Maker's Mark Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Bottle/Rating Data

Proof66 Notes

Maker's Mark bourbon is necessarily made from a primarily corn mash (all bourbons are required to be at least 50% corn among other requirements). But Maker's has an unusually high ratio of wheat as opposed to more typical rye or barley and is sometimes called a "wheated bourbon" as a result. The wheat is believed to create a much smoother flavor profile than some of its competitors.

I bought this bottle with the simple intention of wanting to try this bourbon – and based on the higher price-tag and some of the “bad bottles” I had heard others experience, I was expecting to be a little disappointed…however that was not the case at all! My bottle was absolutely delicious! The nose and initial taste are almost identical – freshly made cinnamon french toast with whipped cream and banana topping. A subtle burn on the finish, but just a drop of water takes that away completely. 110 proof!! No problem!! I bought a 750 ml bottle and after a couple of discounts, I paid $53. Compared to other barrel proof / cask strength bourbons; the ABV is a little weaker, but I don’t think I’d want Makers Mark at 130 – 140 proof. I’m not sure how soon I’ll run out and buy another bottle, but I’m glad I tried it!

Good taste. Much better than the regular Makers.

Nearly identical to the standard Maker's on the nose; neither of them are great there. On the palate though is where the Cask Strength comes alive. The standard is somewhat boring and unremarkable (common in wheaters I think), but stepping up the strength to the Cask Strength level really makes the pour burst with flavor. If this is a limited release I might have to splurge (it is a bit overpriced...$50-60 where I live) and get a bottle to tuck away.
