Proof66 Notes

Redbreast 21yr Irish Whiskey was first launched in 2013 as the premium edition of their brand; the press release described it as the "pinnacle of their range to date." As with the rest of the Redbreast line, it is aged in a combination of sherry casks and ex-bourbon casks aged for a breathtaking 21 years--a highly unusual age for any whiskey and Irish whiskey in particular. Master Distiller Billy Leighton of the Midleton Distillery was quoted by The Spirits Business as taking 3 years to develop and promised it had "stunning levels of depth, flavour and taste."

Okay, this is going to degenerate into a rant. First, I received a bottle of this from very close friends. It was one of the greatest drinking experiences of my love. Deserves all of the accolades and then some. THEN I was at a party and they broke out a fresh bottle of the 21yr. I was in heaven! I tasted it. I swear, it was not the same stuff. Maybe it was the party (though I hadn't eaten anything so my palate should've been clean). Then I got to thinking about my experience with Green Spot: again, I had two different bottles one of which I loved and one that I didn't. Then I think of the various people complaining about the quality of Jameson. Then I think of all the weird Jameson editions coming out lately. So I have to wonder: what the hell's going out at Midelton? Are things chaotic in there? Do they know what's going on at all times and, specifically, what's going in their bottles? Because I'm wondering! Bottom line: this thing gets a 3 from me because I'm perturbed. That said, the first bottle I got really, honestly, and truly is one of the great drinking experiences of my life. I poured a little bit more just now to make sure and--yep! That stuff is the song of an angel in a glass.

KaiserSoze (2017-04-17):
I thought the 12 year was delicious (though grossly overpriced). I gotta think another 9 years in the barrel and 92 proof would definitely make this baby sing!

Phizbin (2017-04-17):
I agree: the 12yr is great. I have the 12yr, 15yr, and now the 21yr all in my personal bar. I'm that much of a Redbreast fanboy. I'm definitely going to treasure every drop of that 21yr.
