Proof66 Notes

Tin Cup whiskey considers itself a "high rye bourbon," generally meaning it has a grain base of 50%+ corn with the balance in rye, giving the bourbon a spicy, robust kick often favored by bourbon enthusiasts. The name "tin cup" is in reference to the Colorado mining town of Tin Cup which itself was named for the cups used by miners to drink their spirits. The website calls the whiskey a "bourbon" though it is not called such on the label.

Love the bottle and tin cup (and yes I realize it's not actually distilled in CO). Looks great on the bar. The nose is heavy rye spice with hints of caramel and charred oak. Neat, this whiskey is all pepper and rye spice. Earthy and dusty. Nice mouth feel. Mild burn with a slight lingering sweetness on the tongue. On the rocks, this whiskey comes to life. All the spice is still there, but mellowed. It develops a creamier mouth feel. More sweetness comes forward. Brown sugar with hints of cinnamon. I've read several reviews that mention LDI's/MGP's spirits having a dill note. This is the first one I've been able to detect that in. Made a great spicy old fashioned. I really enjoy this whiskey! To me this is just a notch below Bulleit Rye and equal to (but "rougher" than) Templeton. I will buy again.

KaiserSoze (2016-12-17):
This just seems so "gimmicky" to me...but you, Cranecreek, & Muncher all seemed to enjoy it. I've been looking at this for a while but never pulled the trigger. Did you enjoy this as a sipper, or use primarily in cocktails?

BDanner (2016-12-19):
I agree, it's 110% gimmicky but the bottom line is (I think, anyway) it's a decent value in the mid $20's. It's sourced from MGP and I enjoyed it neat, but found it benefited greatly from ice or a splash. I also used it in Old Fashioneds due to it's over 30% rye content. It's not going ot change your life, but I found it equal to Beam Black, Bulleilt and several others in this price range.

KaiserSoze (2016-12-30):
Thanks for the info. but I don’t think I see a bottle of this in my future anytime soon – maybe if someone has a bottle at a gathering, I wouldn’t turn down a drink. After sales tax, this will go for about $33 in Michigan and as you know, there are quite a few bourbons and ryes cheaper that are quite good. Sheesh, ever since I stumbled upon Evan Williams BiB, I find it hard to justify drinking anything else.

This is not a whisky I would set out to purchase on my own. I received it as a gift. I know it's sourced from MGPI and they can turn out as good a Bourbon as the big names. At 84 proof its on the thin side and don't look for complexity. But leaving my Glencairn glass on the shelf for now, this is FUN whisky, The flavors are quite acceptable and between the bottle and the tin jigger top it's just well FUN. (did I already say that?) Would I pay my money for a bottle? If I were going to a party and wanted to bring a bottle of whisky to it, I just might !

The first thought that came to mind when trying this one was that it resembles a slightly watered down Jim Beam Black. I like the flavor profile, and BDanner describes it very well in his review, but as the JB Black is already under proofed in my opinion the Tin Cup seems way too watered down. I would like to try this one at a proof of 100 at the minimum.

I wouldnt recommend, probably in line with a Jim Beam; pretty bland.
