Proof66 Notes

Wild Turkey 81 is a recent launch of rye whiskey from Austin Nichols. In keeping with their famous and widely known "101" whiskeys, this is a milder proof of "81" (as opposed to the more traditional 80). As a rye, its grain bill will be at least 50%+ of rye (a robust, spicy style of grain).

For a first time of having a Rye whiskey, felt like it wasn't anything there, just a rebalance to toward certain flavors compared to Bourbon. For what little I had time with it, nosing there was cinnamon spice, honey, some grass, baked goods. Palate: Cinnamon, Wood charr from the Alligator char barrel, honey, pepper. Little rough for finish, but certainly not burning. Works well, had it chilled, but otherwise move along to another rye I guess.

KaiserSoze (2017-05-10):
You’re exactly right when you say you taste a rebalance of flavors - rye and bourbon, for the most part, are made up of the same ingredients, distilled the same, and barreled for a period of time. Rye whiskey is made up of at least 51% rye in the mash bill where bourbon is made up of at least 51% corn. Rye tends to be spicier and more savory than bourbon. I’ve not never tasted Wild Turkey Rye, so I have no point of comparison, but if you’re looking to try others, there are several options out there that are quite affordable. Bulleit Rye, Dickel Rye, Redemption Rye, are all made at the same distillery in Indiana (MGP) and then each bottled independently. Each of these offerings are all under $30 are all quite good, especially for the price. Knob Creek and Woodford Reserve both make a Rye that’s around $35-$40 and both are excellent. Finally, Rittenhouse Rye is a bonded rye (100 proof), a Heaven Hill Product, that can be had for around $25 and is very good. Best of luck to you on your future tastings! Cheers!

Weaselwhisky (2017-05-10):
Thank you! I am looking to Rittenhouse as the next Rye purchase- can't beat it at a good proof strength.

Light carded oak, a little pepper and a little vanilla. Not much sweetness. Straight or on ice it does nothing for me but it makes a very, very good Manhattan. For the price, it is one of my favorites.

Meh....Its ok but for the price you can get George Dickle Rye which is light years ahead of this one. Was expecting much more from this one. I would like to try the 101 version as I think the higher proof would add more complexity to it. All in all not a bad whiskey but I probably will not buy again.

Wild turkey rye 81 has wonderful complex nose of leather, pipe tobacco, spice vanilla, cinnamon, and caramel. The entry is smooth with palate of honey, spice, cinnamon The finish is rye-bread,cinnamon, with hint of honey. It is rye light compare to other ryes

Was not a fan of this. Waited to finish the bottle to see if maybe it would grow on me or to make sure it didn't catch me on a day when my tastebuds were off. Nice spice, but the finish left an odd taste on the palate. Passable in an old fashioned with a little extra sugar. This was a few dollars more than the Jim Beam Rye and not nearly as good. For a few dollars less, I'll take the Beam.

Doesn't seem to have the grazzy kick that other ryes do, but it's a solid whiskey.
