William Larue Weller bourbons are considered "wheated" bourbons named for William Weller who--according to Bourbon Enthusiast--first began making bourbon with wheat instead of rye. To our mind, this creates a bourbon with a softer, subtler flavor profile that is not as robust but not as spicy as rye grain. These bourbons are generally unfiltered, giving them a chewy feel and a haze if drunk with ice.

The nose on this bourbon is exquisite. The taste is extremely complex I can't put it all into words. If you walked into an old timbered barn untouched by activity that was sitting next to an amusement park with cotton candy and toasted almond smells, then opened a box of expensive leather shoes while an old money opera crowd walked by you during intermission you would get a taste of the complexity of this bourbon. A very cozy and warm sipper right in the comfort of your own home.

This antique offering is ridiculously complex and rich. Its proof runs high, usually between 120-130, but cut two parts with one part water and youve got a gem. Its sweet like honey, smoky, and nuanced. Paul Pacult ranked this as the best spirit in the world in 2011. From the spicy entry to the buttery finish, this is a dram every serious bourbon enthusiast will embrace.

Frankly, I am not a big wheated bourbon fan. Maybe that is part of the problem. But frankly, I found this bourbon to be tired and rather nondescript in taste; especially for a 12 year-old.

While technically correct (I can't find fault with the distillation) it is not a riot of taste either. If you have had Makers Mark (by far the most popular wheated style bourbon), and like it, you might give this one a try as it is milder, but also lacks the depth you would expect, so be warned.
