Proof66 Notes

Woodford Reserve rye is a new addition to their core lineup of whiskey first released in winter of 2015. The grain bill is 53% rye, which fits the requirement for being a rye whiskey (50%+) but is far less than the 90% - 100% rye whiskeys adored by many fans. The lighter rye is sometimes called a "Maryland style" rye whiskey and suggests a softer, more approachable rye whiskey.

There has been a huge popularity in Rye whiskey in the last several years. So much so that many producers went to Indiana to Midwest Grain Products distillers and sourced their Rye whiskey. (Bulleit-Dickle-Redemtion-Templton) just to name a few. You get into bourbon and the list gets bigger. Now MGPI does a great job of distilling whiskey and you can buy however many 1,000's of gallons you want and take it home and put your label on it. The problem is it mostly all tastes pretty much the same, and 9 out of 10 buyers will not read a label to see where their whiskey was actually distilled. So I applaud Woodfords for putting in the 4 years aging and the actual distilling to put out this straight Rye. This whiskey definitely has a Woodford background of taste and has a good rye presence but I expected more depth and complexity. It seemed rather light both in the mouthfeel and taste experience. Rather unremarkable in my view. Rather odd that regular Woodfords and this Rye are also the same price. I think that this was produced to take advantage of that Rye popularity, which I believe is waning rapidly.

Sweeter and lighter than all the other ryes I’ve tried to this point. But, that’s not necessarily a bad thing! From what I understand the rye in the mash bill is on the lower side of the spectrum. Many of the nosing and tasting characteristics of Woodford’s bourbon are present here with the rye. Very nice butterscotch and cherry undertones when sipped neat. Makes an excellent Manhattan with a quality sweet vermouth! If you like Woodford’s bourbon, you will like this rye!

BDanner (2017-05-17):
Almost picked up a bottle of this today, but saw the Lot40 on sale and decided to go with that instead

Cranecreek (2017-06-15):
Did not care for this one as much as you, but I also understand your thoughts on it.

At last, I've found my overall-favorite rye . Everything my mouth is looking for, here. Generous caramel floral sweetness (53% rye in the bill). Straight-bourbon BORES me, silly so, this is a GREAT balance of both styles/flavor profiles. The candied palate goes on and on, forever. One of the rare spirits that I could drink, all night ! Good job, Woodford Reserve master distiller ! You done good, brother. Cheers. Slainte' .

This is more for the loyal Woodford Reserve fan than for the typical rye junkie: as the mash bill percentage is up from 18% to 53% (from traditional Woodford Reserve), it is still about as low (percentage-wise) as you can legally go to claim rye (its gotta be at least 51% rye to be classified as such). So my point is, from a rye perspective...its not bad. From a Woodford Reserve fans perspective, its great! Id rather have seen them be a bit more bold and increase the percentage of rye a bit more, but as is this is truly a Maryland (or Potomac) style/blend rye. Still...in a Manhattan it works very well.
